SLOGAN T-SHIRT: NOT JUST WEARING A TEE SHIRT BUT AN ATTITUDE
A T-shirt is not just a piece of casual clothes. In fact, it is an attitude. When you choose a certain Tee shirt, it means that you consciously or unconsciously choose a certain attitude.
Slogans are like personal statements, people express their ideas and opinions through clothing, and the simple and powerful slogan Tee is the perfect medium to showcase their thoughts.
Who invented the slogan T-shirt?
In fact, it is not known exactly when the slogan T-shirt first appeared, however, the person who really brought the slogan tees craze to its peak was Katharine Hamnett, a British designer who excelled in using clothing to make a statement.
According to The Guardian, in 1984, the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher hosted a celebration of London Fashion Week, but while all the young designers were unimpressed because of the political differences between them and the Prime Minister, Katharine Hamnett was not influenced. For her, it was a great opportunity to make an impact.
She made political history that night when she wore that “58% DON’T WANT PERSHING” printed shirt to confront Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at Downing Street, protesting the installation of U.S. nuclear warheads on British soil.
The slogan T-shirt has strength because it is worn on you and is part of you. There is no room for ambiguity.
When did slogan shirts become popular?
From tees to hoodies, daily lives to runway shows. It is believed that there must be at least one or two clothes with slogans printed in your closet. Clothing with slogan elements will always occupy an irreplaceable position in the fashion industy. Earlier slogans printed on clothes have a relative social and cultural background, from the 1960s and 1970s began to be popular.
Since then, various printing slogans on T-shirts have become the simplest and most powerful way of proclaiming opinions.
Back in the days when there was no Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media, there were few ways for people to express their feelings. So people in the 1960s invented the Slogan Tee, putting what they wanted to say on their clothes, which was their social media, their tool to say what they wanted to say.
